People always talk about how IO Interactive and the James Bond licence are a match made in heaven, but we think there's a new pairing that takes the biscuit.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor has just been announced, and it comes from Dovetail Games, the studio behind Train Sim World.
Here's the debut trailer, which is sure to hit readers of a certain age right in the nostalgia:
Developed in collaboration with Mattel, the game has you taking control of several characters from the popular kids' books and TV series, including:
Watch on YouTubeSubscribe to Push Square on YouTube167k
- Thomas
- Percy
- Gordon
- Diesel
- Emily
- James (separate purchase, or included in the Deluxe Edition)
The entire island of Sodor (recreated as "faithfully as possible") is present and yours to explore in the game, and there are a few ways to play.
Firstly, there are eight Stories to play through, which include "classic and original tales" inspired by the source material. These Stories are narrated by Mark Moraghan, who provided his voice for the TV show for many years.
Secondly, there's Timetable mode, which lets you play a "day in the life" of one of the characters, carrying out their duties.
You can also do as you please in Explore mode, allowing you to walk around Sodor in first-person, and ride and drive trains at your leisure. You'll be able to freely place characters along the route to create your own scenes, too.
There's also something called Shunting Challenge, in which you need to move Troublesome Trucks into a certain order in as few moves as possible.
The game has simplified controls to make it accessible to players of all ages and skill levels, but for Train Sim World fanatics, there will be some realistic control options available.
There's no release date in place yet, but the game is coming to PS5 and PS4, where it'll cost £29.99 / €34.99 / $39.99 for the standard edition.

Seeing this pop up as an announcement in my YouTube feed was surreal. Classic Thomas the Tank Engine is very dear to me and I've always wanted a game like this since I was a kid. This could potentially be a dream game of mine.
Train sim world was too complex for me, I just want go and stop.🤣
This game hits all the right nostalgia notes for me and looks pretty as a picture. With simple controls promised, it looks like exactly the game I want it to be! ❤️
God I hope it's going to be on PC
GOTY has now been settled 😆
Joking aside I'm definitely getting this. I grew up watching Thomas when that bloke from The Beatles was narrating it
Thankfully they've not gone with that "All Engines Go" dire artwork.
my 16YO disabled son loves Thomas. Can't wait to play this with him.
My son is going to love this.
@carlos82 When Ringo Starr eventually passes, I'll remember him way more for narrating the first two seasons of Thomas than his work with The Beatles.
I'd play this just because I did play a Mod of those engines in Train Sim PC and all of the voices were ripped from the show, it wasn't bad. The genuine thing will be so much better. I look forward to seeing Thunderbirds make the jump to Flight Simulator (not really but there is a Mod on PC)
@RBMango same, I was never a big fan of them but his voice is a huge part of my childhood and god knows how many times I watched Thomas. These days I wonder how the Fat Controller kept his job, trains were regularly getting derailed and he always blamed them for it, even bricking up Henry in the tunnel when he broke down 😂
@carlos82 He was too busy eating breakfast and fishing to care about the engines falling into ditches or causing trucks to explode.

Yeah, same — it was late in the day and I was half asleep, but it was a very surprising thing to see! And I know the models probably aren't that complex in the grand scheme of things, but they have absolutely nailed that model train look from the original show.
Absolutely lovely news, puts a smile on my face
Shame Ringo isn't narrating, he's the OG but it's no show stopper 👍
Genuinely very cool, clearly a passion project for the devs. And as much as Ringo Starr’s voice is iconic, Michael Angelis is just as memorable for me!
@Agent_P It says Steam and EGS in the trailer, bro
This does nothing for me, but I'm glad people who like Thomas the Tank Engine look to be getting a pretty good game for them.
James is a separate purchase, I'm out.
That music hit me right in the chops, not only am I getting this day one but I'm now going to sit and watch some old school Thomas on the telly.
I hope they support this like they do their other train sim.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEES the original music as well get in
Unfortunetly every one of Thmoas friends will be behind a paywall lol including the Fat Controller
